Hominem unius libri timeo; I fear the man of a single book - St. Thomas Aquinas OP

Literary tradition has it that St Thomas Aquinas exhorts us to fear the man that has read only one Book. Right as he may have been, I believe that what Aquinas did, in fact, mean, was that we should fear those who have only a single view of the world and a narrow way of thinking.

I am deeply convinced that one must be a T-shaped person to succeed in the modern world; that one must be able to think deeply about a broad range of topics and yet be a master of a specific thing. And to a large extent, much of the learning I do as an individual is driven by this realisation.

This blog will try to urge you to think profoundly about a wide range of topics.

And so I invite you to embark on a voyage of intellectual discovery — one that traverses the breadth of human experience and cuts across the silos that exist in our understanding of the world. It will be, as I hope it is, an antidote to the single-minded pursuit of anything that is the mark of our age.
